The southbound carriageway will remain closed for some time Huge billows of smoke could be seen rising from the motorway and as of 7pm the emergency services were still at the scene. A spokesperson for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue stated: "Firefighters remain on scene at the site of an oil tanker fire between junction 28 & 29 southbound on the M1. "Firefighters have been working to bring the contents of the tanker to a safe temperature and this has allowed the safe removal and transfer of the contents to another tanker for removal from the site.
